The last precinct to report in the Shakopee City Council race, from newcomer Pamela Punt's home area in Southbridge, pushed her over the edge, garnering her one of two open seats over incumbent Terry Joos by only 73 votes.
Commanding a safe lead for the other four-year seat was incumbent Steve Clay, with 1,724 votes.
Three candidates came close to winning the second seat: Historic Preservation Committee member Jay Whiting with 929 votes, Michael Luce with 878 and Shawn Marshaw with 814. Far behind the rest of the pool was Todd Schoenike with 283 votes and Ornela Besglagic-Sivula with 174.

Back to page topI think that Todd Schoenike put a nail in his own coffin. The night of the Mayoral forum when he said that if faced with public safety cuts, he would cut firefighters first. We love our Shakopee Firemen!
Bad call Todd.

Back to page topAccording to my notes from that night, what he said is that he thought it'd be hard to cut down in either law enforcement or the fire department, but perhaps the city could save money by having firefighters work more cohesively with other fire departments.

And the lesson to challengers is that you have to seek office armed with new ideas and plans, not just tired claptrap about "fiscal conservatism" and a race to the bottom. (Happily, newcomer Pamela Punt ousted longtime Schmitt rubber-stamper and yes man Terry Joos to take a city council seat.) Shakopee could be a dynamic and rewarding place to live and work under capable leadership, but for too long has wasted the opportunity afforded by growth. Mayor Schmitt remains in thrall to developers and doesn't present any clear vision of Shakopee's future. Sadly, old guard Shakopee voters have ratified the status quo.
